Enterprise platforms can scale to hundreds of thousands of tags; smaller packages may cap at a few thousand. Understand whether licensing is perpetual or subscription-based and what tag expansion costs look like.

Protocol Support

Native drivers for your field device protocols are essential. Most platforms support Modbus, OPC-DA/OPC-UA, and DNP3. Verify native support for your specific PLC vendor protocols (Allen-Bradley EtherNet/IP, Siemens S7, Mitsubishi MC Protocol). Historian Integration

Process historians store time-series data for trending, reporting, and compliance. Some SCADA packages include built-in historians (Wonderware InTouch/Historian, iFIX/Historian). Evaluate: server redundancy, network redundancy, client failover behavior, and whether the redundancy license adds significant cost. Security Architecture

Modern SCADA software should support: role-based access control (RBAC) with Active Directory integration, encrypted communications between clients and servers, audit logging of all configuration changes and operator actions, and support for security hardening (disabling unnecessary services, running as non-admin). Ask vendors how they handle security patching cadence — monthly? quarterly? — and what their track record is for ICS-CERT vulnerability disclosures.

Mobile and Web Clients

Many organizations want operators to monitor processes from tablets or access dashboards from a browser without installing thick clients. Evaluate whether web/mobile clients are included or require additional licensing, and whether they provide full functionality or limited read-only views.
